Breakfast over the Bridge - Chapter 1: the Bridge
59m
A bridge is something practical, but it is also a symbol.
October 11th, 2001, marks the Maria Valeria Bridge inauguration. Situated on the Danube, between Slovakia and Hungary, it was the last unrebuilt bridge after its demolition in WWII. The people had to fight and struggle for more than fifty years to have it back.
The two cities by the bridge are Štúrovo and Esztergom. Once, they were both parts of the same country, but during the last century, the border moved five times over the inhabitants' heads, and nowadays, they have a dualistic relationship of neighbors and strangers, separated by the borders of their countries and united by Maria Valeria Bridge.
We arranged an ‘open casting’ involving the two towns. The selected people were asked to join a stranger from the other community for breakfast on the bridge, with the request that they take their time and engage socially with the other participant. The breakfast was a catalyst for social interaction, a chance for the participants to discuss the joys and difficulties of their countries, and as a result, gain a deeper understanding of each other, and themselves. This experimental documentary explores the limits of communication, interactions among different cultures, and deep confrontation through adversity to feed an open, conscious mind.
